Daily Collage Specimen Collection

In an effort to kick start some creative output at the beginning of 2021 I produced a small (5" x 5") collage every day and posted each one on Instagram.

Each piece in January began with a visual element as inspiration: a specific paint colour, a remnant from an older work, or a unique piece of paper.

After a month of daily posting I learned about #Februllage, an Instagram account and annual month-long collage creating and sharing initiative with pre-selected daily prompts for subjects.

As a result, the collages created in January were titled after completion, whereas the collages made in February began with the title. The only other ‘rule’, restriction, or commonality between the collages was that they would be mixed media and 5" x 5".

This year I curated the 60+ collages and mounted them into deep set frames like specimens. Sometimes there is a theme to the pieces collected; other times the pieces simply compliment each other visually.

Core Series

Continuing from the GRID Series (below), I started with an ink drawing on board which was a pattern in the core (centre) of the composition. Paint, papers, pencil crayon, are among the materials used. Frame size: 11 x 9 in. Image size: 6.5 x 4.5 in. 2010

Grid Series

The inspiration for these intimate collages came from grid-like line drawings I drew in my sketchbook. I chose one of the inspiring sketches, drew it on the illustration boards, and then took great pleasure to source the materials and mediums to make unique compositions. Frame size: 11 x 9 in.
